I'm not up on my medieval art, what's this based on? (It's SPLENDID, by the way.)

Mostly it's the Silos Manuscript - this link has a good overview of some apocalyptic illustrations, and a link to scans of the entire book. That particular page might be familiar if you've seen the movie version of The Name of the Rose, as it's one of the manuscripts Adso peeks at in the library.
The monks are taken from the "Queen Mary Apocalypse" and are supposed to be false prophets with frogs issuing from their mouths.
Since the dragon is meant to be drawing the stars behind him with his tail, I added a sun and moon because I needed to fill space. The whole thing was done for I'm Sorry Jon, a subreddit dedicated to dark Garfield images. I had the idea one afternoon while working on something completely unrelated, and realized it would bother me until I actually drew it. And thank you :)

I was coming here to say that I found the monks to be by far the most unsettling element of the picture.
