Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

Fandom Questions

[personal profile] wavesagainstrocks posted questions about how people do fandom:

Those that actively engage with media or fandom (or both!) in your day-to-day life, do you find it hard to be into multiple things at once? Or can you easily switch between interests? Say, you can equally balance your attention between two or more shows? Please elaborate in the comments if you can!

Same goes for those on the flip-side. Do you feel like you can only be into one or very few things at one time? Do you have to let the one "main" obsession run its course for you to be able to move onto something else? Comment your thoughts!

I've already replied there, but I think it's a fun conversation. The blogger would like to reach a wider audience, so I'm hoping mine will pitch in.

Finally heard from the sleep doctor's

I got up at 8:30, and had breakfast. [personal profile] mashfanficchick texted me that ze was staying an extra day in Ohio, to help out with a specific issue. Then ze called me by messenger so Theo could show me something. I was properly impressed, and then went back to bed until 11:00.

Then I got texts from cousin Steve, first, that Mike and Kat had their baby, a girl, and then to tell me he and Amy were going to be in the city soon, and did I want to meet for lunch. Of course yes. So I told him the days I was free and we'll see what happens.

I called the sleep doctor's back, and finally got to speak to a human. She took my info and said someone ould call me to schedule me.

After puttering around online for awhile I went to the bedroom to finish reading The Godmother. While I was reading they called back from the sleep doctor, and I have an appointment for the study. And there's no copay, which is very good, especially since I may end up Ubering home afterward at a cost of $70. On the way there I'll take mass transit, but since I'll be leaving at 6:00 the next morning, I think Ubering makes more sense despite the cost.

I got delivery of both my Thriftbooks orders, the second Scholomance book, and the first in a Jo Walton trilogy, The King's Peace. I want to read that because Jo Walton is the Guest of Honor at Worldcon when I'm going to be there.

After finishing The Godmother, I decided I needed to actually do something constructive today, and emptied all my trash baskets. I tossed on some clothes and took out the trash, an walked around the block as usual.

I texted the Kid and asked her to call me after 9:00. To my surprise she called me right then, so I filled her in on everything. We didn't talk long but it was nice.

At 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB. We talked until I had to get off for my Al-anon meeting by Zoom.

The meeting was quite good, though M didn't come. But S was there and two other people showed up.

After the meeting I had dinner, then went to the bedroom and played solitaire on my phone. I need to decide which book I'm going to read next!

Then it was pet feeding time so I did that and here I am. Oh, I was actually able to get Oreo into the carrier all the way this morning, though just for a few seconds. But it's a start.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid.

3. Heard from the sleep doctor.

4. Got two books.

5. My meetings and the people there.

6. Going to see Steve and Amy.

Affordable Housing

You Have More Land Than You Think

Clever design creates more housing on small sites.

You might assume that squeezing small units onto small lots might end up feeling claustrophobic, but a few simple design principles can actually lead to housing that is welcoming, comforting, and feels spacious. Best of all, a smaller house is more affordable, and land costs are spread amongst more units, creating greater affordability without subsidy.

Fossils

Mammal ancestors laid eggs, and this 250-million-year-old fossil finally proves it

A 250-million-year-old fossil egg just revealed how an ancient survivor beat Earth’s deadliest extinction.

In the aftermath of Earth’s most catastrophic extinction event, one unlikely survivor rose to dominate a shattered world: Lystrosaurus. Now, a stunning fossil discovery—an ancient egg containing a curled-up embryo—has finally answered a decades-old mystery about whether mammal ancestors laid eggs. Using advanced imaging technology, scientists confirmed that these resilient creatures did reproduce this way, likely producing large, soft-shelled eggs packed with nutrients
.

In terms of world domination, Lystrosaurus was arguably the most successful lifeform on Earth.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, breezy, and mild.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen any yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- We went to Whiteside Garden again. This time I picked up a clump of wildflowers fused together: a couple of tiny ferns, and even tinier columbine, and some yellow violet.

We stopped to chat with a friend. His yard has several red-headed woodpeckers. I heard them drumming and spotted one as it flew away. These used to be the dominant woodpecker around here, but have been largely replaced by downies and are now rarer to see.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I planted the new wildflowers. One yellow violet had come loose, so I put that with my others. The rest of the cluster went into the mossy part of the savanna which already has a woodland feel.

And now I'm hearing thunder, on what was supposed to be my main planting day. *sigh*

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I planted the sedum from yesterday and watered the newly planted things.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I planted the holly from yesterday at the east edge of the Midwinter grove.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I watered and mulched the holly.

It's 83°F outside now, too hot to do as much yardwork as I hoped. At least I got the Whiteside things planted.

I've seen a few sparrows and house finches, plus a fox squirrel.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I watered the pansies and violas. The hot wind is just stripping the moisture out of everything. :(

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I watered the new picnic table garden.

I saw a brown thrasher foraging in the house yard.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I raked a section of orchard.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I sowed some grass seed in the orchard.

EDIT 4/14/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

Wish Me Luck

For months now, I've been turning my phone on by plugging my earphones into the jack. Some time around last August (I remember because it first happened when I was one of the GoHs at Diversicon,) my on/off button just stopped working consistantly. If someone texted/called me or if I lucked out, I could sometimes turn it on.Eventually, it fully failed. I discovered that the screen would turn on when it registered a device being plugged in, so I just carried around a zillion pair of earphones so I could always turn it on as needed.

I've been skating by on that for... well, I mean what is that? Almost six months?

Last night the earphone jack gave up the ghost. It accepts no plug into that jack as anything real. If I'm listening to a podcast, everyone gets to hear that I'm into "Betwixt the Sheets" and other sex history podcasts. That is, when I can turn it on. Right now, the only thing my phone will still recognize as a device is its charging cord--but only when active, as in plugged in. In essence it's a landline now, which is not what I need and, as it happens, I still have a landline.

I found a place on University that supposedly will deal with ancient technology like my Samsung, so, hopefully, they'll be able to fix one or both of the phone's problems. It'd be cool if I could actually turn it on the normal way again, but I'd settle for a working earphone jack.

Before you yell at me, yes. The plan *is* to buy a new phone. They're not that expensive. This will be an "in the meantime" as we wait for it to arrive solution. And, yeah, I'm aware that it's possible that the repair person will tell me that the cost of fixing it is more than the price of a new phone (keeping in mind that my family buys cheap-ass phones from Tracfone.) In which case, I'll figure something out. I can keep a charging cord in my car and so maybe before I go out on school patrol I can plug it in and just make sure I am always tapping the screen so I don't lose the ability to go on mic or, you know, hang up. I'll still be without headphones, which would suck, but you know, needs must.

My appointment at the shop is for noon. I'm hoping for something simple and cheap.

Wish me luck.

Hurricanes are slowing down - and dumping far more rain than before

If you’ve ever watched a hurricane stall on a weather map and became worried, you’re picking up on something scientists are increasingly concerned about.

A new study suggests that rapid ocean warming isn’t just making tropical cyclones dump more rain.

It may also be slowing some of them down while they’re still in their tropical phase, which is basically the worst combo if you’re on the coast or anywhere downstream.

Spine Straightening

theradicalchild: (Rad and His Chiropractor)
[personal profile] theradicalchild
While it was sprinkling this morning and I planned on going on a morning walk, I decided against it in case it turned worse.

I went to the post office to send off my notarized form to CCHR--I don't keep stamps on me since I don't mail out shit often--and while I was waiting I spilled the coins from my wallet, and again another major "fuck you" to 18 years of psych meds that fucked my brain up.

On that note,
here's an article from CCHR noting that psychiatrists make up disorders for fun and profit.

I called my chiropractor to note I was running late since there was a line at the post office (I think I spilled my coins during the call), and since he was always usually late anyway, he didn't mind, and he did his usual shit on me.

I worked out at Gold's Gym afterward. This evening I got a call from someone offering a complementary personal training session but said no since I said I already got mine, and they noted that.

Tomorrow, I will try if I remember to do a dopamine reset--avoiding all my devices for an entire day since I don't have anything planned--but I may start something new on my Steam Deck since I beat Yakuza 0. Link to review (image is link).

Very quiet day

Last night I managed to fall asleep while I was still playing on my phone in bed. I woke up at 3-something with the light on, my reading glasses on, and my phone having slipped out of my hand (fortunately it didn't fall to the floor.) Very weird sensation.

Anyway, I put everything away and turned off the light and went back to sleep pretty easily. Got up this morning around 11:00 and had breakfast and coffee.

The toilet was still wonky, so I put in a Shipt order including a new plunger. It arrived unusually quickly, and I plunged the toilet, and it is fine now.

Then I did mostly nothing all day. I tried, unsuccessfully, to talk to someone at the sleep doctor's. I think they may only be there Tuesday through Thursday so I'll see if I hear tomorrow.

I got a rather disturbing phone call from the hospital that provides my mental health services, apparently for the first time now they require a referral from my PCP for getting paid by my insurance. I never needed a referral before. I gave the woman the name and phone number of my PCP. I hope I don't have to start paying a copay.

I called Duane Reade because I haven't heard about my prescriptions being ready, and sure enough they don't have any record of my psychiatrist phoning them in. He must have forgotten, luckily I have enough for now. But I'll have to call him before I talk t0 him again and remind him.

I read the Cat Haiku that I got awhile ago from Thriftbooks, and I read more in The Godmother.

At 7:00ish the FWiB told me he had to run out on an errand, which took longer than he expected, so we didn't talk til 8:00. But we had a full conversation anyway.

The Kid just texted me, she is safely home from her weekend away.

Last night [personal profile] mashfanficchick called me, which was nice. Ze returns home tomorrow.

Just fed the pets. This morning I gave Oreo his Fancy Feast in the carrier and lifted him in all the way. He jumped out immediately but it's a start.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The toilet is fixed.

3. The Kid is home safe.

4. [personal profile] mashfanficchick returning soon.

5. Good books.

6. My pets.
