Yesterday we ordered two different kinds of willow cuttings. I couldn't find a new contorta willow at a reasonable price, so I'm trying these instead. It will take time for them to grow roots, but willows are the easiest plant to root -- they make their own rooting hormone, which can be used to stimulate other plant cuttings to root.

Took the laundry down

Once more I failed to get up at 10:00. I finally made it out of bed by 12:00. I had breakfast and coffee, and then showered and dressed,

I took the ag of laundry that I got together yesterday down to the laundromat, I am happy to report that although there is still a lot of snow, the street and sidewalks were clear.

Dropped off the laundry and came back home. Worked on the story I've been wrking on, largely editing what I already had, but did some writing and am now around 3,330 words.

Last night in bed I went to PetSmart on my phone. I've always gotten pet products online from either Amazon or Petco. But someone had said PetSmart was better than Petco, so I decided to try it out in my eternal search for a pump to empty out the turtle tank. And I found something that I hope will work! I ordered it right then, paid for it by Paypal so I didn't even have to get my credit card out of my purse.

And got overnight delivery, to be delivered by DoorDash between 3:00 and 6:00. So I was waiting for that while I wrote. It came around 5:00, and I looked it over, looks like just what I want.

Didn't have time to try it out today, and won't tomorrow, but on Friday I will. Hopefully I'll be able to drain the tank and fill it up again.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick called and we made plans for tomorrow.

So that's the news of the day. Then at 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB. The Teams worked well, so I was hopeful that the Discord would work for my game, but there were problems with it. I had to switch out to my phone at two points. But I was able to take part in most of the game, and had a good time.

After the game finished, I fed the pets and had my dinner, then started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Got my laundry down.

3. No problem with uncleared sidewalks.

4. Got a pump that looks like it'll work.

5. My gaming group.

6. My phone.

The State of Things

My sleep score last night was 86/100, I got up and peed once, with interruptions being the worst score, and it still shows a lot of awake time when I'm not awake. Though again I'm never deeply asleep.

I called my apartment manager about the apartment mailboxes that still haven't been fixed, and about the shower window curtains I accidentally messed up, but they said I would have to pay for that myself, and I'll just remove them and substitute dimming for them that I ordered on Amazon.

Fairview served sweet and sour chicken, though they gave me exactly one little piece of pineapple when putting on the sweet and sour sauce. Nothing to rage about.

Then I shopped for a few things at Walmart.

The MAHA Zoom thing today talked about ending liability shields for things like chemical producers and I think vaccines, which I agree with, and the chemicals we spray our crops with. There's a lot of people complaining about recent government decisions about trying to produce our own, and the president and Secretary Kennedy have affirmed that we can't just 100% phase them out, or else crop supplies would suffer, which I agree with.

There's a trauma-related Group Reiki at a local store, The Witches Closet, tonight that I'll go to.

I'll try to do another dopamine reset as I had a few months ago after reading that book, so I'll power off my devices for one day, and pass the time by gaming on my Steam Deck.

Congress is trying to stop Medicaid funding from going to transitioning minors (a lot of gross images in the link, by the way). Again, that is evil and satanic.

And given that I've been reading tons of anti-psychiatry material, I can say that conditions like ADHD and gender dysphoria were never really "discovered," they were pretty much voted into existence by psychiatrists to sell more pharma drugs, and you can't do blood/urine tests or brain scans to determine if people have conditions like them.

The president pretty much nailed it in his State of the Union. He invited Congress to stand if they agreed that the duty of the American government is to protect US citizens and not illegal immigrants, and of course no Democrats stood. And calling them crazy for not wanting to ban gender transitions on minors. Heh.

Image

He's also still pushing Congress to pass photo ID and proof of citizenship to vote in elections, which I definitely agree with, and you need to present stuff like that to get jobs in America, basic services, pretty much anything.

And he's been pushing the Senate to end the "zombie filibuster" and go back to old rules where filibustering senators have to stand in the Senate chamber and talk (and now they require a 60/100 cloture vote to actually pass anything), and I know no one will want to talk endlessly for things like banning men from women's sports or banning gender transitions on minors.

Image

I had the Castlevania games in mind when designing this, and tried to mimic Ayami Kojima's art style.

I don't really America to be in a "golden age," though, and more call it "The Great Awakening"--not really religious, more overall, since I would really become aware of shit like gender transitions, some of evil shit America did post-World War II like overthrowing democratically-elected governments I found through Chomsky's books, and the medical establishment lying to us, among other things.

But I would definitely rather be governed by people who love this country, even though I don't agree with its founding principles (especially one group being "savages"--I would consider MAGA to be the new "merciless Indian Savages" and the modern Woke people to be the equivalent of the Founders, even if that's a really fringe view) or history.

Vocabulary: Bossage

Feb. 25th, 2026 02:55 pm

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
Bossage - noun.

From the "there must be a word for that" department comes bossage. This architectural term refers to uncut and unfinished stones that act as placeholders for decorative and practical elements that will be carved later. Did you ever think about how carved decorations were placed on a building? Did they just get stuck on? No, a bossage was used.

I am reminded of how some writers will put "Maincharacter" or "Towndescription" so they can search-and-replace later.

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny, chilly, and calm -- much nicer than yesterday! :D

I fed the birds. I haven't seen any yet though.

I put out water for the birds.

The snow crocuses are open again.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I trimmed the north edge of the wildflower garden. Previously I did the west edge.

The male catkins on the hazelnut bush are beginning to open up, but the tiny red female flowers aren't open yet.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I trimmed the east edge of the wildflower garden.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I trimmed the south edge of the wildflower garden. I'll still need to clear the middle and rake off the loose leaves, but that's less urgent since the spring flowers will emerge near the edges. In the process, I uncovered the dark purple leaves of a penstemon that I planted last year. :D It won't bloom for quite a while yet, as these are usually late spring to early summer flowers, but already it makes a lovely accent in the bed. The leaves are only about half the size of my hand, but the whole plant is easily a foot across.

In the savanna, the first of the snowdrops have flower buds, but none have opened yet.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a large flock of sparrows, a mourning dove, and a fox squirrel.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I have many dozens of fruit tree seeds just starting to sprout in their bags of damp sand in the fridge. I decided to try putting some outdoors in water jug pots. I have the jugs cut, labeled, filled, and sown with seeds. I still need to tape the seams closed and move the jugs out to the parking lot. I put 5 seeds in each jug. The varieties are Pink Apple, Johnathan Apple, Ginger Gold Apple, and Yellow Pear.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I taped the seams, then moved the jugs to the parking lot. There I set them in a square with the handles facing inwards, then looped some salvaged string through the handles to secure them. This way, they're less likely to get knocked over. Finally I watered them a little bit.

Daffodils and snowdrops are sprouting in the parking lot. I need to try moving these so they don't get killed by later parking lot work.

EDIT 2/25/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a male cardinal.

I am done for the night.

Cuddle Party

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!

Negative Social Ties as Emerging Risk Factors for Accelerated Aging, Inflammation, and Multimorbidity

Negative social ties, or "hasslers," are pervasive yet understudied components of social networks that may accelerate biological aging and morbidity. Using ego-centric network data and DNA methylationbased biological aging clocks from a representative Indiana sample, we demonstrate that negative social ties are surprisingly common: on average, one in four network members is described as a hassler, and nearly 60% of individuals report having at least one. Results show that having more hasslers is associated with accelerated biological aging, with the most pronounced associations observed among individuals whose networks comprise more than 50% hasslers. Crucially, not all negative ties show the same influence: ambivalent ties providing both support and stress show stronger aging acceleration than exclusively negative relationships. Beyond epigenetic aging, hassling exposure is associated with poorer self-rated health, higher levels of depression and anxiety, elevated inflammation, greater multimorbidity, and adverse anthropometric indicators. These findings together highlight the critical role of negative social ties in biological aging as chronic stressors and the need for interventions that reduce the impact of negative social stressors embedded within close social networks to promote healthier aging trajectories.

Loneliness may have high risks, but it is often better than being harassed or outright abused. It's nice to have positive social ties, but they only help if they really are positive.

I actually got up with the alarm today at 10:00, and made it out of bed pretty quickly. I had breakfast and coffee, and started to write again.

The story is going pretty well. It's now 2,850 words, and has more to go. I'll work on it tomorrow too.

Once again, that's pretty much all I did today. [personal profile] mashfanficchick called me to tell me ze has zer plane tickets for zer next Ohio trip, and we talked a bit, that's all.

Oh one thing I did was get a bag of laundry together to take down tomorrow.

Anyway, at 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB, the Team worked well so I had hopes for my Al-anon meeting Zoom working. But it was only semi-working, it kept blanking out audio. Fortunately there was only me and M there.

After the meeting I had dinner, and went to the bedroom to lay down.

Facebook reminds me that today would have been Aunt Helen's 97th birthday. I miss her, a lot.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The writing is going well.

3. My meetings and the people there.

4. Memories of Aunt Helen.

5. [personal profile] mashfanficchick

6. The Teams worked well and the Zoom was at least usable.

Driving Miss Vicki Yet Again

My sleep score last night was 77/100, and I got up and peed once, and it showed me as awake when I wasn't, though then again, my allergies and fidgetiness still bother me.

I took Miss Vicki out on her errands in Killeen today, to a bank and then to a shoe store, and she bought me to-go lunch at Raising Canes that I ate at home, and gave me $12 on CashApp.

During my drive the tire light on my car came on, and I aired up my tires back at home.

The mailman didn't take the package with the saliva sample I left for an autism genetic SPARK study when I put it out in my mailbox, but then again, Morris' managers have yet to repair the mailboxes outside my apartment and the red flag went AWOL time ago. I was also still getting mail from previous tenants and went to the post office to drop the package off and affirm that I am the only one living at my apartment, which I did early this evening when Mom texted me that she got mail for me--I didn't actually get a ding of the notification and ended up deleting the "Personal" mode on my devices since that might have been doing it.

CCHR Texas got back to me, and they had forgotten to actually email the form to me despite having the email in draft mode, but I got it and printed it out and am working on it slowly. I'll also need to email them links to my Google Drive with my psychiatric records.

A 16-year-old detransitioner won a lawsuit against a psychologist and surgeon for malpractice in "gender-affirming care." Yeah, transitioning minors is a major human rights and Nuremberg Code violation, and flat-out evil. I hope lawsuits against psychiatrists for mind-lobotomizing medications follow eventually.

Apparently California governor Gavin Newsom dropped out of the 2028 presidential election. Yeah, he must have realized no one wants the rest of America to become like California, given the incineration of Los Angeles. And there's a likelihood that the tax fraud there could eclipse Minnesota's, and there's plenty going on in Massachusetts as well.

The president's State of the Union is happening tonight, but I'll just probably read the transcript since I'm afraid there would be some sort of tragedy then, which I wouldn't be surprised would happen since the Democrats really have no agenda other than screaming bloody murder about everything he says and does. But I wouldn't be surprised if they pull some dumb stunt like that auction sign crap at his first address to Congress last year, and that caveman Al Green heckling him.

It's also Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman's heavenly birthday, and he helped create the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), which is of significance to video gamers like me.

He was Al Gore's running mate in 2000 and ran for president in 2004 but Gore endorsed Vermont's psycho governor Howard Dean instead. He was primaried in 2006 by Democrat Ned Lamont (who's now governor of Connecticut) because he agreed with George W on the Second Iraq War, but he won reelection as an independent and retired in 2012.

And I know how it feels to be betrayed by my own people as well.

This time it's a Mediterranean restaurant called Oasis Fresh, where I got a vegetarian platter. Basmati rice with dolmas on top, side salad, hummus, and pita. Simple and very good. The rice was much better than that place I got the boiled unflavored rice from (Assyrian...something) with no hummus. I added it to the "good" restaurant list and I'll remember it for the future, though I'm just bringing my lunch tomorrow.

Visited Laila in the hospital yesterday. [instagram.com profile] sashagee told me before I got there that Laila was energetic and chatty earlier in the day, but by the time I got there she was listless and half-asleep. I waited around for an hour but she never got any more energy, but this morning right when I was finishing my breakfast, I got a FaceTime and Laila excitedly showed me Ariel and told me about the wires coming out of her head, so she had more energy at least earlier today. We'll see if she has more energy when I go see her after work today--I saw some pictures that Poppa and Nana took when they visited and she was more subdued then. We'll see.

I've been slowly reading a book that's much more interesting than my slow pace would indicate, called The Son and Heir. The book starts with the author finding an SS uniform hat in their attic and then expands to the story of his family--Dutch in Latvia and owners of a business empire, the clashes between his father and his grandfather over heritage (his grandfather was very proud of being Dutch and his father wanted nothing to do with the Netherlands), the way his father ran away to enlist in the German army to fight the Russians... I'm halfway through the book and the author is three years old, but his father has already divorced his mother, been put on trial for being an SS members and gotten off after only ten months in jail, avoided being sent to South America, and married another (already-married) woman. The book is only half-over. Now that the setup is all over I wonder when we're going to get the author's reaction to all of this?

Computer is still working. It's been over a month now without a single crash and the only thing I changed is plugging some things into the USB ports. Maybe it really was a faulty USB connector. Well, it saved me $2000, so I won't complain. Of course, now [instagram.com profile] sashagee is asking for a gaming laptop so she can play Stardew Valley with mods, and Clair Obscur with the "disgustingly easy" parry mod. I've been looking around but I have no idea what a "mid-range" gaming laptop should look like so it's slow going. I'll gladly take any suggestions if anyone has any.

Space lasers reveal oceans rising faster than ever

A new 30-year analysis reveals that melting land ice is now the main force behind rising global sea levels. Researchers discovered that oceans rose about 90 millimeters since 1993, with most of the increase coming from added water mass rather than just warming expansion. Ice loss from Greenland and mountain glaciers accounts for the vast majority of this gain. Even more concerning, the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating.

Poetry Fishbowl on Tuesday, March 3

This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Poetry Fishbowl. This time the theme will be "World Cuisine." I'll be soliciting ideas for cooks, fusion chefs, immigrant cooks, eaters, farmers, foragers, food scientists, inventors, recipe writers, famous figures in food history, cooks of disadvantaged groups who should have become famous, superheroes, supervillains, failure analysts, ethicists, activists, rebels, other people active in the food world, cooking, gardening, harvesting, foraging, preserving, writing recipes, discovering things, decolonizing diets, building or using kitchen equipment, conducting experiments, observation changing experiments, troubleshooting, improvising, adapting, cooperating, bartering, taking over in an emergency, discovering yourself, studying others, testing boundaries, coming of age, learning what you can (and can't) do, sharing, fixing what's broke, upsetting the status quo, changing the world, accomplishing the impossible, recovering from setbacks, kitchens, restaurants, food trucks or carts, campfires, barbecue sites, laboratories, makerspaces, nonhuman accommodations and adaptations, picnics, grocery stores, farmer's markets, roadside fruit stands, U-pick farms, gardens, food forests, other places where people make food, world cuisine, ethnic cuisines, cookbooks, online recipe archives, permaculture, heritage diets, climatarian diet, traditional foodways, culinary archaeology, food sovereignty, drought-resistant crops, trial and error, ethnic spice sets, weird food, fusion food, secret ingredients, supplements that turn out to be metagenic, new ideas in cuisine, alternate agriculture, lab conditions are not field conditions, ethics of food, innovation, problems that can't be solved by hitting, teamwork, found family, complementary strengths and weaknesses, personal growth, and poetic forms in particular.

Among my more relevant series for the main theme:

An Army of One has to figure out how to feed a diverse, far-flung group of people who sometimes have special dietary needs.

The Bear Tunnels introduces modern principles to people in the past, including some aspects of food science.

A Conflagration of Dragons has the Six Races (plus the dragons) who all have different diets.  This often poses challenges for the refugees.

Daughters of the Apocalypse has people trying to find and prepare enough food to survive, when city libraries are out of reach.

Fiorenza the Wisewoman uses herbs and healing foods to care for her village.

Frankenstein's Family features two scientists running a valley in historic Romania.  Igor enjoys cooking and has gotten at least one of the werewolves curious about cooking the human way.

Hart's Farm is a community with food used as one of the popular bonding methods.

Peculiar Obligations combines Quakers and pirates in the Caribbean, among other groups and places, leading to a wide variety of foods.

Polychrome Heroics has ordinary humans, supernaries, blue-plate specials, superheroes, supervillains, primal and animal soups all of whom need to eat.  Primal soups and high-burn soups often have special dietary needs.  Comfort food and healing food are also very popular here.  The Rutledge thread includes Kardal and his food truck Syrian Foods, along with references to Vermont, French, and hippie cuisines.  Pain's Gray, Shiv, and the Finns are all fond of cooking too.

Or you can ask for something new.

Linkbacks reveal a verse of any open linkback poem.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week. (If you're not available that day, or you live in a time zone that makes it hard to reach me, you can leave advance prompts. I am now.) Meanwhile, if you want to help with promotion, please feel free to link back here or repost this on your blog.

Turning Away

Ramadan has just started and my Signal group is having trouble finding enough protectors to fill evening slots. My Food Communists are talking about a $40,000 shortfall that may end their ability to feed people in hiding. March 1 is looming for people who haven't been able to pay rent and are facing evictions. Yet, local politicians are declaring victory and telling people it's time to "go shopping."

Meanwhile, ICE is still being tracked throughout Saint Paul (and presumably Minneapolis, but I don't have access to those Rapid Response groups). Reports that I've seen seem to indicate that the majority of the activity has moved out to the less well organized smaller towns and suburbs. Though the "sexy" part of the resistance--the gas in the streets, the violent confrontations--has dried up, the danger to our immigrant communities is far from over. There is zero sense that ICE is actually leaving. They have switched to quieter, more subtle tactics. They've gone further afield. But make no mistake, they are very much still here.

Last night I went to a Singing Resistance meeting for an action that took place this morning. I managed to miss this morning's action because my GPS decided that it wanted to autocorrect Street to Avenue!  VERY DIFFERENT, GPS!  In fact, a very important distinction!!!  So, I ended up getting lost in downtown Minneapolis long enough to miss the gathering time.  But, what was interesting to me is that these Singing Actions have, in the past, brought thousands of people into the streets. Famously, they sang songs encouraging ICE agents to defect outside of some of the hotels hosting them. The action today was for rent relief and trying to get the city officials to consider a temporary rent moritorium, something they were very willing to do during COVID, but which they seem less willing to do for Black and brown folks (shocking, I know!)  At any rate, I went to the pre-planning/song rehersal last night with [personal profile] rachelmanija who is visiting right now and... it wasn't an empty church, but it also wasn't standing room only. The organizers kept saying, "I think more people will join us tomorrow." Well, I wasn't able to. I sure hope other people did. Otherwise, it's going to be pretty sparse. They will not fill City Hall, like they hoped.

But, this seems to be part of a trend. I'd noticed the day after it was announced that ICE was pulling out, my Food Communists was almost ghostly. Plenty of bags of groceries still needed filling, but the number of volunteers that showed up to do the work was less than half of the normal amount. More people have showed up since, but we are nowhere near our previous number. It seems to be the regulars and the die-hards again--although thankfully the Veterans for Peace are still guarding the doors for us.

I ran into some neighbors yesterday when I was walking home from the Communists and they were returning from a daily protest. They also noticed a significant lack of bodies. People were still there, but the crowd was thinner. It's worrying because we are all still very much holding our breaths.

I guess people are buying into the idea that we won and that it's all over. I mean, I would very much like that to be true? I'm just not sure it is and it's disheartening to see that the energy could not, in fact, be maintained.  Maybe people are just taking a breather. I hope that's the case.

The Paperwork Problem Behind the Housing Shortage

In more and more places, the rules technically allow incremental housing. Backyard cottages, accessory dwelling units, and small infill homes are legal on paper; beautiful, glossy images of these homes are shared on city websites and included in planning documents. Yet these homes rarely get built—not because of public opposition or failed rezonings, but because routine procedures treat small homes like major developments.

What we have is not a failure of vision, but one of process.

Woke up with the alarm at 10:00, then dozed on and off til 12:00. Finally got up, and had breakfast and coffee.

Then I started writing on the story I started yesterday. I made significant progress, up to over 1500 words now.

And that was really all I did today. I contacted Funko again about my Stephen Colbert Pop, they essentially said be patient.

At 5:00 I stopped writing and went to the bedroom til 6:30. Then I came out and started trying to get Teams working to Team the FWiB. We both had issues, but eventually we got though and talked til a bit after 830, when we were interrupted by his brother calling him.

I had dinner then, and went back to the bedroom. I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and we talked about various things including Middle Brother's birthday. I had texted RK last night about him taking us out for that, he says he doesn't know yet and will have to see. If he can't, not sure what I'll do but probably a combination of the LIRR and Uber, which will be expensive, but necessary.

Anyway, I fed the pets, and now here I am, and that was the day.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Story coming along.

3. Friends.

4. Warm apartment.

5. Came through the blizzard without problems.

6. Heard back from Funko.
