Today is mostly sunny and sweltering.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

Goblincore is an aesthetic based on the darker side of faery and the appreciation of imperfect things that other people often consider ugly or otherwise undesirable. Many of the reference pages are less than flattering, but the entries on Wikipedia and Aesthetics Wiki offer a starting point. It is laughably dated to the 2020s. I'm guessing whoever wrote that missed the entire history of fairytales, curiosity cabinets, and the rest of its very long history.

I do enjoy LJ Idol. I have never viewed myself as being more than a slightly above average writer. Maybe get a A- essay / post on a VERY good day. C- to B is where I would put most of my writing.

But, it is fun, and it is a community. I recognize may of the competitors from previous years.

AND I am wanting to be more creative / expressive. (yes, I know I have said that before...) probably many times...

2025 LJ Idol Week 1 Poll

That is the poll for Week 1.
I got 8 votes, next lowest got ten.

The previous year had more drama associated with it. (See my reply to the 2025 Week 1 Results post, as I like to the July 2024 posts.

I slept late, and got up and had breakfast and coffee. I unpacked my duffle bag from my trip, dressed, and took out the garbage.

I made a phone call to the cottage insurance company since they didn't call me back Monday. I made a call to the company that's storing Oldest Brother's belongings. I rented a storage until where [personal profile] mashfanficchick has zer unit, to move Oldest Brother's things into.

I Teamed the FWiB. I didn't have D&D tonight, it was canceled.

Just had a long conversation with the Kid about the plan to rent the cottage. She's bogged down on insurance details, and stuff about the deed problems.

Fed the pets, now it's time for bed.

Tomorrow I have an appointment with the eye surgeon.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Kid.

3. My family.

4. MY pets.

5. The Agatha Christie I have been reading.

6. Bed soon.

How Earth's First, Unkillable Animals Saved the World
Sponges have survived every catastrophe and every mass extinction event that nature has thrown at them. And by being the little, filter-feeding, water-cleaning creatures that they are, sponges may have saved the world.

How Volcanoes Froze the Earth (Twice)
Over 600 million years ago, sheets of ice coated our planet on both land and sea. How did this happen? And most importantly for us, why did the planet eventually thaw again? The evidence for Snowball Earth is written on every continent today.

That's reassuring given the poor life choices of Homo sapiens today.

Every night, she saw visions of the End, sketched out in blood and muzzle flash and chains forged link by callous link by people who called themselves saviors and heroes. Every morning, she fed the chickens and brought the neighbor their mail and taught herself to fix the sink when it broke. This was not a contradiction, nor an abdication, but as natural and right a response as taking the next breath.

I spotted this video about harvesting, shaping, and firing wild clay. I did that back in high school at Ancient Lifeways Camp. It was a lot of fun to dig and clean the clay, then make things. Our theme was Sumeria, so we made oil lamps (harder than you'd think) and cuneiform quotes. I also made a ceramic goddess figurine. We used a pit fire, which helps keep the temperature more stable. If you have a source of natural clay, this kind of project is well worth trying.

dorchadas: (Awake in the Night)

The icon is an anti-icon because I actually haven't had insomnia in a long while, and I even got enough sleep last night! I managed to finish all my nightly chores--prepping for breakfast tomorrow (cook fish, set rice in the rice cooker to cook overnight), make lunch, exercise, clean up a bit, take a shower, check on Laila and make sure she's sleeping--by 10:45 p.m., and then I read for a bit and lights went out by 11 p.m. My watch tells me I got three hours of deep sleep and six and a half hours of quality sleep, all of which ended when Laila took a flying leap onto mama and abba while we were both sleeping. I was in the middle of a dream about...something. I don't remember it anymore. That's pretty standard for me now.
"When Randolph Carter was thirty he lost the key to the gate of dreams."
-H.P. Lovecraft, The Silver Key
I used to have dreams that stuck with me for hours, at least long enough to write them down, and some that remained no matter what. I still remember recurring dreams from my childhood, like the one where I was in a cabin on a peninsular cliff over a raging ocean under a clear blue sky, or the one where my friends and I were hunting vampires through a weird dream version of my hometown. Now I basically can't remember any dreams at all. I had already forgotten most of the details of my dream within a few minutes of waking up and now I can't remember anything. [instagram.com profile] sashagee tells me that sometimes I'll be thrashing around and muttering and she'll wake me up and I'll thank her and fall back asleep and I have no memory of any of this ever happening.

I used to have real trouble falling asleep in any reasonable amount of time but waking up to take care of Laila fixed that. Now I can fall asleep usually in fifteen minutes or so--not as much as my father or my sister, who are "head hits the pillow and lights out" people, but still way better than the thirty-minutes to an hour of previous. My worst night ever I lay in bed for seven hours until eventually giving up, but nothing like that happens anymore. On the other hand, I don't remember my dreams anymore either, and I wonder if the two are connected? Looking it up it should be the other way around--poor sleep quality is connected to fewer dreams--so maybe I just need to put a journal next to my bed or grab my phone and jot down notes if I have any dream memories on waking up. That's hard when nowadays we're usually woken up by a very enthusiastic Laila though, but it should at least be worth trying.
