I don't think I can keep racing marathons. I don't think my body can handle it anymore.
Fox agrees with me. We're signed up for Dopey in January, but after that, no more marathons. Half? Sure. But the full 26.2 is getting to be too much for me. I can run long distances on my own but race day situations for whatever reason are just too harsh and I'm too dead. It's not fun any more. Besides, I've run ten of these things, I think I've proved I'm a badass. I think it's time to drop the full marathons and find other adventures.
Only racing half marathons also frees us up to do more things we've discussed like hiking the Florida Trail, more camping, etc. The massive expense of racing Dopey puts a LOT of money back into our hands. And like I said, it's not fun anymore. It's more worrisome and scary than it is a challenge, and it's not like we have anything left to prove here. I'd rather go to Disney for non-race weekends and just be a tourist. I'd rather head out to the state parks, beaches, and see other parts of the state than be tied to a training schedule for a demanding race.
Fox and I both think we're capable of training for and running a sub-2 hour half. I don't want to stop running or racing, but this last race day was hell. I was finishing on nothing but willpower. Last night at home I was having these whole-body muscle spasms, and freezing my ass off. Me, who normally has a metabolic furnace that keeps me very warm in winter. I was so exhausted I didn't want to eat, and I *always* want to eat. I know I've got one more to do, but I'm done. This Dopey can be my victory lap - I did something less than one percent of the population has ever done, and I did it multiple times.
I also think I'd easily make it into Half Fanatics. That would be a fun feather in my cap.
"So what're you gonna do now, Bird?" This week I need to do that colonoscopy prep - that's Thursday. I may do a minor grocery run today but I'm also still not walking great. We can always do that Thursday after my thing. I guess right now I'm just going to work on recovery. I finished the Gene Wolfe novel I was reading and I'm on to Calde of the Long Sun now. I found his Solar Cycle has a few more books in it that I don't have, so I might go to Chamblin next week.
But yeah, I'm done.
