Stepping Up
Feb. 13th, 2025 04:58 pmOur volunteering with Keep Clay Beautiful is off to a pretty good start. We picked up our section of highway and the grand total for that first round of picking was 220 pounds. Including a hubcap, a roll of hog fencing, entirely too many piss bottles, an enormous socket wrench (unfortunately too far gone to be usable), and so goddamn many diapers. Seriously, what the fuck. Anyway, we met with the coordinator last night, and he gave us a bunch of cool stuff, including hi-viz green t-shirts and these neat trash bag things you can carry in one hand, and it keeps the bag open. Much more efficient than our bucket system.
The training/orientation was mostly going through the handbook, talking about expectations and dress codes, etc. Each area has some specific requirements, so if someone wants to volunteer at the animal shelter, there's an additional animal handling class to attend. I signed up for parks and rec, so I have a lady to email and set up a time to go get oriented over at Camp Chow. We were out pretty late last night.
I've started picking up trash along Villa Neuva, mainly because I am tired of looking at it. As much as I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and say it's blowing out of trucks or something, it's probably being tossed on purpose. I think people see the dirt road with no one on it for about half a mile, and figure "no one lives out here." So they dump all kinds of shit.
Anyway.
If we're lucky, we're about to get some rain showers. It's too hot, and the rain will pack the road down. Tomorrow I think Fox plans to break my computer down and work on it some, including cloning my drives. He's upgrading his rig, so I get his hand-me-downs, which isn't the worst situation for me. I've never exactly needed to be an early adopter or anything. And a lot of the games I play aren't that hard on system resources. It'll be fun to see how Baldur's Gate runs though.
