Alarms and Diversions
Mar. 2nd, 2023 06:53 amThis morning I checked the local police blotter to see if there was any info on what was going on out here yesterday. Oh yeah, I forgot to post about that. On tonight's episode of "COPS: The Middle of Bumfuct, Nowhere!"
Fox went out for a short run and sent me a text about seeing some cop cars running silent down our highway in the general direction of McRae. He kept seeing more and more of them. Eventually he got home and a sheriff's office SUV was coming down our road, and it turned around to ask him if there was "a way through." I mean, yeah, technically, but you're not getting a vehicle through there, and on foot it's dodgy. That's almost entirely swamp. But I suppose if you're on the run from Clay County's finest a little swamp isn't going to deter you.
In answer to my question, yes, they got their man. The arrest is listed in the 4300 block of our road, and I'm in the 4500 block. All it says is resisting an officer without violence, but his older arrest record from late last year is ... interesting.
He went to some woman's house after having an injunction against him, wielding a machete. The woman called the cops, while this guy went out to an outbuilding or barn where her daughters were playing, threatened them with the machete and took one girl's phone. He ended up getting tazed. The mugshot is of a guy who doesn't look familiar to me, but at the same time looks like a dozen guys I've seen around here before. Average white dude with a Van Dyke.
We also had a lot of military fly-overs all afternoon and into the night. Military aircraft don't have to identify themselves, so our Flight Aware showed nothing, but there were jets flying in fairly dramatic loops, helicopters at almost tree level (please don't hit the radio tower....) and all kinds of other aerial shenanigans. With the choppers, I wondered if it was something to do with the person the cops were looking for, but I think it was just unrelated.
So quiet out here in the country. So peaceful.
