Recently I've noticed that after following my normal training schedules, I'm often feeling more beat-up than usual by the time a rest day comes around. Since this is proving to be detrimental, I feel like I need to change something to, hopefully, prevent injury or burnout. For some reason I'm not getting younger, and I'd like to continue running for a long time. I like running, and when I'm not dead tired and sore all over, I really enjoy hitting the trail or pavement and going zoomzoom.

I've often heard of lower-volume training, train slow to race fast, and things like that. I don't have any problem with time - I'm fortunate to be in a position where I can spend more time attending to my health and fitness. Fox also runs so he understands the demands, and my cats are used to being marathon orphans as long as they get wet food. But my joints and connectives tissues don't seem to be enjoying it. I'm churning out lots of miles each week, but I feel like they're not good quality runs. I'm just surviving them, and not really accomplishing much.

There are two strategies I'm going to explore. One is training three days a week - run Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, cross train in between, and run a little faster and harder when I do run. There would be a day each week where I'd want to get out and bike, for example, and days dedicated to strength training only, rather than needing to stack weights on top of an already hard run. The other is a 10-day microcycle, which is just a fancy term for "ignore the calendar, your running week now has ten days instead of seven." This one takes a little more thought and planning, so I'm doing some homework on it before trying it out, whereas the three-days-a-week thing I can start as soon as I'm back home.

I really need to start packing and getting things ready for our trip tomorrow but I don't feel like doing a blasted thing. I'm also annoyed because I pre-ordered a copy of Thermae Romae and it's supposed to ship today, but the website now says "backordered"? Are they out of books after fulfilling the preorders, or is this just more fucking around? They already changed the ship date once. If it does ship today like they said it would, I probably won't get the email about it until later in the afternoon anyway, I was just hoping to see some movement. If it did ship today it might be here when I get home. Of course, I haven't read my copy of Long Gone Don, either, because I can't seem to muster the executive function to do anything, whether it's fun or not.
