Shake It Out
Aug. 21st, 2020 07:36 amJust got an email this morning from 1st Place Sports ... there's a 10k this October in Green Cove Springs! Hmmm.
It's called the Whistling Death 5k/10k, held out at the old airbase and military museum. So it's a trail run, essentially. It's also likely to be the same basic course that they'll use for the Hellcat 50k this January. And it's only twenty five bucks for the 10k. AND this place is really close to my house. The only way a race could get closer would be if they held it at Camp Blanding.
I am strongly considering doing this, if only to get outside some, shake out the cobwebs and dust, and get a good trail run in before I do my Homemade Half in November. 10k is a fun distance for me, I can be done in under an hour, and I get to preview the course for the next race. Since the Black Creek Bowl was cancelled (pre-pandemic) I was running out of local fall race options.
Fox may or may not want to join me, but he'll probably at least tag along. Plus, the military museum has a Higgins Boat. I don't know how close you can get to it, but there it is! Long story short on Higgins craft, they were designed around southern Louisiana and based on the Cajun flat-bottomed boats for getting around in the bayous. A street next to the WW2 museum there was named Andrew Higgins Drive. Or Street or whatever. I'm also used to calling them Higgins Boats but they're also known as LCVP.
I need to make a quick trip into town today to get rid of some donation items now that the Habitat For Humanity office is open and running again. Monday I'll be making a dump run. Doing both of these on the same day would require way more driving and more strategic truck packing than I really want to deal with right now. So hopefully things will stay relatively dry until I finish that.
