Life Is A Highway

Some photos from yesterday's long run, which may or may not amuse you.

Hey! Let's go on a "Forrest Gump" run! Starting out with this, my road. So when I say things like "the road's pretty bad this week," you'll have a good idea what I mean. It's looking decent right now, but a few weeks ago there were massive washouts where right now you'll see just some sticky mud.

Sixteen miles later, I reached this point, in Middleburg.

Finally, some pedestrian infrastructure. *whew* Running up SR21 was nerve wracking with huge trucks going by and not much shoulder to speak of. Worse was when people would pass other vehicles, and I suddenly hear engine roar and the WHOMMPF of air as they blow past me at like ... 70. I've seen people pass four other cars at once. It's insane.

Fox helpfully sent me a photo of Feisal living his best kitty life. Awww.

Okay, let's talk about this thing. A little over halfway done, I came to my first Wawa stop and got this smoothie/milkshake. I'm normally the kind of runner with a cast iron stomach, so there's very little I have to avoid when running. This though ... this is a peppermint cookies and cream cheesecake smoothie. It's got over 1,500 calories. It's got almost 200% of your daily recommended allowance of sugar. It's decadent, amazing, and so thick I had to let it melt for a while before I could suck it up through the straw. I actually was run/shuffling slowly enough that I just wrapped it in some paper napkins and carried it with me. It took me about eight miles to drink the whole thing.
Somewhere along Discovery Drive I finished the shake, stuffed the napkins in the cup, and just carried the sticky thing until I reached a Publix where I could put it in a trash can. Discovery Drive was ... boring. There's just not much out there, but it did have a sidewalk, so I could be just bored, rather than bored and terrified by 18-wheelers. I eventually reached Oakleaf Plantation Parkway, where I reassessed and decided to just get to the next Wawa and call it good. My mood was still good and I wasn't in any dark holes, I just knew if I tried to get three extra miles I might have pushed myself too much and blown up. So I headed up that road until I reached this.

The highway 23 overpass! Yay! I'm almost there! (The Indiana Jones theme music starts playing in the background) Fox drove past in our truck as I was running up the last mile and beeped at me. I somehow made it across all six lanes of traffic alive, and was able to change into dry clothes, lose my hydration pack, and go get some non-sweet food. Life is good.
