I'm putting most of this entry behind a cut, because it's full of angst and drama, and you might not want to have to deal with reading it right now. That's fine, and I'm not saying that in a passive-aggressive manner. But to give you a quick rundown in case you want to know what's up - I haven't talked a lot about my family here because I don't interact with them very much. I feel like I "ought" to be concerned and keep in touch with them and want to see them but I can't seem to find two fucks to rub together to start a fuckfire. It turns out this attitude is considered pretty normal for people who were adopted, as they don't often form strong attachments to anyone as babies. I was adopted by my maternal grandparents when I was born, as in they took me home from the hospital. I had never really concerned myself with "adopted kid problems" because I assumed since I was part of a kinship adoption and remained with my family, that stuff didn't apply to me.

Boy oh boy was I wrong about that. )

One of my least favorite holidays is coming up and I know it's far too much to ask, but I always hold out hope that people will quit setting fireworks off.

I also found a good workaround for my need to fidget with and worry at things made of soft silicone - I bought some of those silicone Enso rings. I can fidget with one of those to my heart's content. I have a rose-gold/copper one that, oddly enough, seems to blend in with my skin, and a glittery green/purple color called "dragon." I might get a thicker band for my thumb, as I've always liked wearing thumb rings. I just quit wearing rings of any type during the early days of Covid because they made handwashing annoying.

I'll be getting around to commenting/responding later today, but for now here I am posting an entry. Woo!

I mentioned that I didn't have a TV for a longish time, but when I was in high school we did have one of those massive floor model things that cats like to sleep on, and we even had cable! I grew up with three channels plus PBS, and there was a FOX affiliate in Knoxville but we couldn't pick it up. So it was 2, 4, 6, and 10, and of course, video games on channel 3. Having cable meant I spent my summers ... watching classic movie channels. This was an all day thing for me - I loved (and still love) movies, and getting to see all these old movies was just amazing. I watched stuff I never hear people mention any more, like Mighty Joe Young, The Last Remake of Beau Geste, all those Esther Williams "swimming flicks," The Long Long Trailer ... okay that last one is actually referenced in a They Might Be Giants song.

Later, I enjoyed things like "Silent Sundays," and whichever channel it was than ran samurai flicks on Saturday mornings. I love Kurosawa's historical epics, and will talk your ear off about why you need to watch The Hidden Fortress.

These guys. You need to watch it because of these guys. :D

Aside from all the Star Wars stuff, it's just a tremendously good movie.

Anyway. I have a small backlog of films I need to watch this summer, so whether it's too hot and the sand's too soft, or if that tropical system comes and sits over us and dumps rain, I'm likely to be on the treadmill, which means catching up on films and on my Crunchyroll shows.

Yesterday I tested a suspicion I've harbored for a while now, and yes, the closet door mirrors in the main bedroom/exercise room ARE warped. I took a wooden ruler and put it against the glass, and every mirror has multiple warped areas, both horizontally and vertically. This is likely why when I see myself in those I typically wonder what the hell is going on with my body. Actually, nothing is going on with how I look, the mirrors are just distorting my reflection enough to mess with my self-perception. Since they're large sliding doors, I would guess the glass that the mirrors are made from is thin, so it's both cheap and lightweight, but thinner glass warps more easily. The bathroom mirrors are much heavier, so my reflection there tends to be more reliable. The few times I've taken mirror selfies, they're using the bathroom mirrors.

Oh, and we have two pumpkins starting to form. YAY! And Fox came across a UF Extension flier on something called an Everglades Tomato, which I'm going to try to acquire and grow here. It's getting to that time of year when not much of anything grows here aside from the squashes, certain tropical spinach varieties, and some herbs. But these hardy little tomatoes thrive on heat and humidity, and they're self-seeding, so they'll be a welcome addition.

I'm bidding on a 1964 set of the Childcraft Annual How & Why Library. The listing has all 15 volumes, listed as being in good condition from a smoke-free home.

And I'm buying it for the illustrations.

I had this same set as a kid, and I know I've mentioned the pleasant afternoons I spent browsing my Mom's collection of art books. The How & Why Library was part of my eye candy diet, and even when I was well beyond the intended level of the books, I liked flipping through them to enjoy the illustrations.

When I was working in Louisiana someone donated an old set just like this, and I had to keep my hands off - it needed to go to the kids' library, not into the trunk of my car. Since then I've occasionally searched around places like Etsy and eBay looking for sets, and I've asked at some of the better local used book shops. Oddly enough, Chamblin Bookmine never got a set from the era I'm looking for. So while I'm trying to reduce my personal spending, or as I sometimes put it, "stop buying dumb shit," I think this will actually be a good use of my money, if I look at it from the ratio of dollars spent to happy hours. A few years ago I found a copy of one of Mom's art textbooks I'd particularly liked and bought it, and I do not regret that purchase at all. Not that it was super expensive.

Unless someone really starts sniping at me in a few hours, I'll have this one, and the shipping is stupid-cheap for some reason.
