My hiking staff is coming along pretty nicely. I need to finish doing some whittling or shaving so it doesn't have a spotted appearance when I put Dutch oil on it. I also have epoxy to seal the metal shoe so it (hopefully) won't hold water. Then all that's left is acquiring a piece of suede and some leather lacing for the grip, and decorating, of course, but that can come later.
I don't want to get overly fancy with decorations because I'm interested in collecting hiking medallions and they'll be decorative enough as is. But I'm considering using a pyrography pen to put my name on it or something similar. Instead of my literal name I could even just do a flying raven design. Some of the walking stick forums I'm on either go all-out with carving or leave the sticks more or less plain, and I don't see many photos of people's trail sticks. I've read a few descriptions but just not seen any photos. So it makes me wonder how many people are out there hiking with these things that look like wizards' staffs.
