Friendly Forest Creature of Habit
Feb. 22nd, 2024 04:35 pmYesterday was my last hard tempo workout ahead of Gate next Saturday. I drove to Keystone and parked at the official Palatka-Lake Butler trailhead, since I needed to do two mile intervals, and would prefer to focus on pacing rather than watching oncoming traffic and wondering which truck is going to kill me. There's a little stretch where they have a "story walk," and they regularly change these pedestals out with different children's books. So you can bring a kid and walk along, reading one page at each stop. Right now it's a book about a musk ox in the Arctic who gives shelter to all the different animals by letting them hide from the snow in his shaggy fur. Cute story, nice illustrations :)
Anyway I somehow set a personal best for the 10k on that run. The last time I did something like that, I set a major PR at the race I was training for, so fingers crossed! That time I ran both my fastest kilometer and mile while training for a local 5k, then took five minutes off my previous time at the race, and won my age group. I don't think anything so grand will happen at Gate - my age group is too big, and there are too many genuinely elite runners for me to even have a hope of placing, but it bodes well for my PR goal.
Someone's burning a trash pile - I can smell pine needles burning. Hopefully they're watching it. Things are dry enough right now that a fire could get out of control pretty easily.
The last few days have had Fox doing after hours system maintenance for his work. It throws our usual dinner schedule off but it doesn't happen that often, and I don't really mind. But they have to wait until after five to start taking servers offline and patching them. He's got more of that Saturday, but that's also a routine thing that's done every month. He got done a little early last night but it was still pretty late when we finished eating. He thinks tonight ought not take very long because they don't have many systems left to do.
Someone we know suggested we try to make next month's Friends of Gold Head State Park meeting. I think we've missed February's meeting but even if Fox doesn't want to go, I'll make a point of attending, and try to get more involved unless the other people think I'm weird. It might do me some good to get out. Maybe I have a few social skills left. Maybe I can do something positive.
