For the past few years we've been trying to befriend the local Crows. This isn't easy to do with rural Crows, given that they have a lot of food choices, so they aren't likely to approach a human. But I have had minor success putting out unsalted popcorn, peanuts in the shell, and things like that. I have this terra cotta dish on the ground that I put corn and stuff in to keep the squirrels out of the bird feeders, and some birds like Doves and Crows, also come eat out of it. So to the deer, there's one out there hogging the dish right now. No, two. Jeez.
This week when I go to put out food, I hear Crows calling, so I know they're watching. Today they were up in the trees in the yard waiting, rather than hanging out in the edge of the forest. They seem to come around a lot more in summer anyway. Their winter roost is over in Belmore, but I don't see much of them in winter. Once these deer are gone I'll put out a little more food.
