Tokyo Nobody
Oct. 31st, 2018 04:53 pmThis morning, my phone turned into a paperweight. I spent some time trying to get it back and eventually Fox was able to get it to boot a little, then it typically hits a "boot loop," but he did get to see an error message that essentially says an operating system update went wrong. We have no idea at this point if he'll be able to get it back so for a while, possibly for the rest of the trip, I'm going to be without a phone and by extension, without a camera. I am taking some pics with his phone, but I'm reluctant to just take it and use it even though he offered it to me. I'm still going to post the pictures I've taken so far, I'm just going to collect them into albums by location. But I've been editing them as I go so I don't have a huge backlog, which would normally mean I wouldn't bother at all.
Since it's Halloween we've been avoiding certain parts of Tokyo - namely Shibuya and Shinjuku. We were in Shibuya on Sunday and it was insane - so many people! It was like Mardi Gras, and I am not making that as a favorable comparison. And actually, from the news we saw that people overturned a truck, among other foolishness going on down there. Monday we went to Kamakura and hiked around, then yesterday we went to Mount Takao. Today, after poking around the electronics district and Yodobashi Camera, we went to the Imperial Palace to see the Yasukuni Shrine and the National Gardens. It's gorgeous, and the old fortifications are fascinating, but I have not yet learned to take snacks with me on these trips so my blood sugar crashed. If I don't eat by around one in the afternoon I am in trouble. Tomorrow I'll get some onigiri and maybe a bag of candy to carry with me - carbs and sugar.
We've got just under a week until we head home now. We'll be revisiting some places - one of the shrines is having an Autumn Festival this weekend with a flower show, and I'd like to see that. Where there's a festival there's street food vendors. I also have some small shrines to locate, like the neko shrine where people leave cat statues, and there's a pizza place I still need to find and visit. They make actual pizza, not this weird shit with corn and mayo. And tomorrow we're out of Halloween season and into autumn proper, I guess you could say, and all the limited time foods and things change. It looks like chestnut might be the popular flavor which is fine by me, I adore chestnuts.
So for now I'm going to relax a little. Later in the evening Fox and I go out and get ice cream or pastries, then I typically turn into a pumpkin. My sleep schedule seems to have adjusted to basically the same as when I'm at home - go to bed around eight and get up at six. I'm having a great time, but I am getting a bit homesick - I'd like to see my kitties and sleep in my own bed. BUT tomorrow might have pizza and chestnut lattes! Mmm.
