pshaw_raven: (Hannibal with Skull)
The chicken in milk got postponed, so I'm doing it this evening. It's only been in the oven for twenty minutes and it smells heavenly.

Right now it's looking like my meds will be arriving tomorrow. Actually the tracking says Tuesday, but the package already left Jacksonville headed for my local PO, which means unless something weird happens, it'll be out for delivery tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to resuming my normal life. My eating is all over the place, my exercise routine is off because, with the stomach upset, I don't always have the energy to run. I'm up until almost midnight trying to "wind down," then I sleep late to make up for it. I'm usually in bed by around nine and up at six-thirty or seven.

I need to drop back by the doctor's office Tuesday and let them draw blood. Then I'm strongly considering hitting the Jacksonville farmers' market for veggies. What I'm thinking about this week is this: instead of deciding Monday night what I'm making this week, I'm going to see what veggies are available and build my menu around that, at least for up through Friday. As the weather warms up I really want more veggie dishes, plus I feel like I ought to be offsetting my recent shitty diet.

I don't like to classify foods as "good" or "bad." We already turn shit like poverty and your physical appearance into moral issues, food doesn't need to be part of that dichotomy. So I haven't been "naughty" this past week, I just haven't been fueling my body in the best ways. I also have never been able to fathom the notion that food that is good for you needs to taste bad. Lord deliver me from any more bland-ass vegetables that have been steamed to death in the microwave and then get served up with no salt and pepper, no butter, and you're expected to eat that shit. I actually really offended someone on FB by suggesting that the reason most people grew up disliking vegetables is because that's how they were served to them as kids, because your mom never learned to prepare them any other way, and now you do the same thing. "But that's how most of us were taught to cook!" Yeah well, there are some great cooking channels on YouTube, go watch some. :D

That was what I was served growing up, and I hated it. I was allowed the salt and butter that mom put on it, no more. Now that I cook for myself I found the best way to introduce myself to new veggies is pretty simple. Cook them with either
A. Hot sauce, or
B. Bacon.

Or C, both! But seriously, I developed a taste for eggplant by making an aggressively seasoned and cheese-rich eggplant parm. I like cauliflower because I slathered roasted chunks of it with habanero wing sauce. My favorite asparagus dish involves wrapping the stalks in bacon and broiling them.

But anyway, I find myself daydreaming about this salad I used to get at Cannon's in New Orleans. Saturday afternoon, downing glasses of cold Chardonnay and watching streetcars rattle past while working my way through this YUGE pile of greens topped with blackened chicken breast, chopped pecans, and a blue cheese vinaigrette that I would love to know the recipe for. Oh, and don't forget the fresh black pepper ground over it by the server. Man, that was a good salad. My other fav was the Wonton Chicken Happiness at Sweet Tomatoes but they closed in Orange Park. NOT THAT I AM BITTER ABOUT THAT OR ANYTHING

Sorry, I just have zero chill on food topics. Very strong opinions. I will fight you. It'll be a food fight! LOL

So I'm hoping to make a kinpira - a Japanese veg dish and bento staple of roasted carrots, parsnips, or even lotus roots, with sugar and red pepper. A shaved asparagus salad with toasted walnuts. Shredded Brussels sprout slaw with ginger and sesame seeds. Stir fry with plenty of mushrooms and baby greens. I'm even eyeing a recipe for pea shoot pesto, seeing as how I have a dozen lettuce-leaf basil plants growing right now. Just no pea shoots, so I need to find those. Oh yeah, and Tasty Japan had a vid on yakisoba four ways, and yakisoba is a great way to stretch a small amount of meat as well as get plenty of plant foods in your belly.

And since I need to be fasting to get that bloodwork done I'm probably going to pack a simple bento lunch. Are any of you at all interested in seeing bento pics? I'm not good at charaben, but I make a decent little bento.
