A few months ago the Smithsonian published an article on the wild plant that eventually gave us modern tomatoes, and it mentioned that the closest cultivated tomato to that wild South American plant was the Everglades Tomato. I've not really been able to grow many tomatoes here, though I know Florida can and does produce them. But I had a successful run of cherry tomatoes and we thought, well these are Florida natives let's try that. I bought some seed from a local nursery and though it's late in the year, they're doing just fine.
You can obviously eat them as-is but you can toss the whole tomatoes into a pot and make a terrific sauce. Most kinds of cherry tomatoes are sweet enough to make really good marinara. I'm probably going to plant an entire 8x4 bed with these next spring.
