Is there a word for that feeling when you consult a sports nutritionist and find you've been eating something like a thousand calories less per day than you actually need to perform well?
Maybe it's in German, they have a lot of those big, compound Frankenwords for nebulous concepts.
Also, how the hell am I supposed to eat that much.

You can find lists of high-calorie foods:

Pick a food and search for recipes using it.
To find sport recipes online, "gainer" is a useful search term (in English).

There are also lots of "keto" recipes high in fat. It's not a great diet unto itself, but individual recipes can be good.

Mediterranean is a great all-round diet, tends to go lower calorie on average, but there are plenty of high-calorie dishes especially pasta.

Some of my characters have a high-burn metabolism, so I've looked up a lot of nutrition-dense recipes. This page has the Lasagna Bomb (816+ calories), Cheesy Garlic Bread (480 calories/slice), Italian Chopped Salad (673 calories), and Unipalooza Cake (547 calories).

Then there's the just plain fun stuff.
* Reverse the usual lightening tactics and replace a low-calorie item with a high-calorie one. For example, say you love curry. Use potatoes instead of cauliflower, or pour curry sauce over cooked whole oats instead of rice.
* Instead of empty calorie desserts, seek full calorie desserts that are both high-calorie and nutritious. One of my favorites is sweet potato pie: high in fiber, assorted nutrients, and one slice is more Vitamin A than you need all day. Chia pudding or jam isn't just sweet, it adds fiber and more nutrients. And so on.
* Shove in extra ingredients. Almost any "kitchen sink" cookie recipe can be turned into a foodcookie by loading it with nuts, clinical-grade chocolate, coconut, dried fruit, etc.
* Travel recipes can be very dense. Old waybread recipes, hippie breads, seedcakes, dried fruit bricks, etc. are all good. Good lembas facsimiles usually use nut flour and are high-calorie. Your local international store likely has date or apricot bricks and halva by the slab in the Middle Eastern section. These are things you can chuck in your sport bag to devour after a workout or event. Things like this:

Have fun looking for high-burn foods. They're awesome.
Re: Try this ...
Scrolling through some of my saved recipes and favorite sites, I'm finding a lot of things that flag themselves "healthy" just mean "low in calories." Which is great if you need to go that way. I'm trying to prep several things ahead and have them in the fridge, because if I have to cook for myself, I probably won't.
Re: Try this ...
You're welcome. I like talking about food.
If you browse the links under my poems, you'll see I link recipes a lot, and as I mentioned, some of my characters need high-calorie foods, of which I usually link the healthier kinds. Or hit the Recipe tag on my blog, I design a lot of recipes and they are rarely "lite" because I dislike tampered ingredients. A seasonally appropriate foodcookie recipe: "Pumpkin Spice Cookies."

Yeah, that's a problem. To find high-calorie foods or recipes, you have to know where to look; it's a smaller target but there are several clusters.

Watch for recipes you love that can be made in bulk and saved. There's a luscious pea soup recipe in the Elder Scrolls Cookbook that includes bits of carrot and bacon, and would probably store well. You can make or buy curry sauces and pour them over whatever you like, of which the korma tends to be highest in calories because it uses cream and/or nut butter as part of the base. Africa uses peanuts / peanut butter as a base. Gosh, now I'm thinking about African spice blends and wondering if you could just add peanut powder for an instant curry...
Yes, I'm a food nerd.
