WFLX AM 1680

(radio transcript, 12/8/20XX, 14:00. Transcribed by TG. To file)

Good afternoon, listeners! Cat Slade with your Sunday afternoon here in Calisto County - St. Felix, Blue Moon Lake, the beaches, and Deerbone. If you’re out and about today, expect clear skies and dry weather to continue, in fact, we may not see rain until later next week. Lows tonight in the 40s.
Calisto County Sheriff's Office has blocked off a section of state route 19, north of Waybridge, for Handsome George. A couple of fishermen reported this morning that the lake serpent was heading on shore and beginning his migration between Waybridge and Lake Joseph. The recent bout of colder temperatures is thought to have triggered his change of address a little early this year. If you’re headed out that way, you’re advised to take Joseph-Beth Church Road to avoid getting stuck. Unless you want to see Handsome George! But be advised that police aren’t letting anyone get close to him. Remember, he’s pretty quiet but he’s enormous and he can hurt you.
Good luck, Handsome George!

Michael Franti - Subterranean Homesick Blues

America - Sister Golden Hair

Crash Test Dummies - Afternoons and Coffee Spoons

Dale’s heading home from his fishing camp and called in with a request for Gin Blossoms. “Allison Road” is a classic track from my college years, and I just admitted I’m old on the air! (laughter) Anyway, here’s a song about a guy who isn’t sure if he’s in love and messes it up anyway.

Gin Blossoms - Allison Road

Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Fishin' in the Dark

Fun fact - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band collaborated with Steve Martin on “King Tut”! Yeah, they were “Toot Uncommons.” Now that’s a thing you know. Keep listening to me, Cat Slade, and you’ll get a top-notch education, or you’ll at least be ready for trivia night.
Speaking of top-notch educations, Pat called in during the song block and asked about going back to school. Apparently they were invited to audit a creative writing course and wanted to know if they should do it. I feel like if you’re given that sort of opportunity, you always take it. You’ll learn a lot no matter if you become a best-selling novelist or you self-publish a memoir. And if you don’t you’ll have that lingering sense of “what if.”

The Cranberries - Linger

The Decemberists - June Hymn

Al Stewart - Year of the Cat

“Year of the Cat” is a remarkable track, and the album version has some long sections of pure instrumentals, so if you enjoy that check it out. Al Stewart’s signature piece.

Gabby in Saint Felix called in and she’s having a little dilemma. She bumped into a high school friend this morning at the farmer’s market - if you’re in the downtown area look for the farmer’s market each weekend on Garcia Marquez Avenue - and she’s wondering if she should try to become close again. She said they drifted apart during college, and the friend moved to the West Coast for a while, but is back home. I know some of our listeners are pretty wise heads, so drop your advice on our Discord or shoot us a text and we may read it on the air.

To me, this is like listening to an old favorite song again. It’s not going to be the same as it was when you first heard it - too much has happened since then. But that doesn’t mean you can’t start again, now with all the experience in between. It might bring new appreciation and depth you never expected. I sometimes think of myself as “out of sight out of mind,” and that if I lose touch with someone, they’ll forget about me almost overnight. It’s a difficult mindset to fight against.

Since we’re revisiting old favorites, here’s a track from the first album I bought, with my own allowance money. I’ve always loved “Something.”

The Beatles - Something

Seals & Croft - We May Never Pass This Way (Again)

Neal McCoy - Wink

That’s going to be it for me today, everyone. Stay tuned for more classic and modern rock on WFLX as we head into the late afternoon and evening. Before I sign off, I’ve got a great message here that “Too Many Bees” left on Discord for Gabby, and it says, “The past might enrich the present, but it’s important not to have too high expectations. If your friend also wants to reconnect you know you’ve got a shared history that you can build on, but if they’re not interested, maybe just acknowledge what that time meant to you and move on. Let them make the next move.”

Like I said, we’ve got some wise listeners. Stay golden.
