One time, deer got into the garden and one tried eating a cayenne pepper plant. All I found was a single leaf with one obvious bite taken out of it. Apparently that was more than enough to warn her off ROFL

Sometimes plants just up and die. I was reading a "food forest" group and someone said they were trying to stop babying plants that didn't like their climate. That's hard because sometimes you just REALLY want something to grow but it's not the right area for it. Plus it just keeps getting hotter, and it feels like everything is dying of heat stress.
