Monk Mode
I started playing Rain World when the DLC was released - I don't own Downpour yet, but I'd had the game gathering dust in my Steam library and decided it was time to try it out. I'm still on my first play through, which I started as the Monk, since that is the "easy mode."
Monk faces fewer predators, and those are somewhat more likely to ignore him. He requires less food to hibernate, and karma gates set themselves to a permanently open state once you successfully cross them. But.
Monk is slower and less agile, and his attacks do less damage, so for the purely platforming areas of the game, I find he's actually much harder. I'm honestly considering leaving off here and starting a new game tonight with Survivor. I'd need a finished Survivor game in order to unlock any new slugcat in the DLC anyway. But I'm stuck in a ventilation shaft in the Drainage System, and Monk seems horrible and wall jumping, so trying to climb shafts of any significant height is frustrating as hell. I think his swim speed is slower, too, so getting through this area with no available bubble weed is tough. I've had several evenings where my Garmin buzzes at me, saying, "You seem to be experiencing unusually high stress! Would you like to try a breathing exercise?"
NOT NOW GARMIN MY SLUGCAT IS DYING
In addition, I found that Monk doesn't have access to colored lore pearls. The "official" reason is that he exists in a much later time frame than the other slugcats, and the pearls are gone. There's a glitch I've seen where I find and pick up a colored pearl, only to have it disappear or turn gray after hibernating. So if you're going for the "Scholar" passage, you can't do that with Monk. You may also find "Dragon Slayer" incredibly hard, since his spear throws do less damage. I spent a couple of nights just trying to kill a green lizard and couldn't do it. They require as many as ten successful hits with Survivor, so Monk had no chance.
Like I said, now that I feel like I have the general rhythm of the game, I'm probably going to start a new one tonight. I'm not upset about it or anything, I'm just really into this one and I want to get as much out of it as I can.
