I don't think they had the hard-sided pop-ups in the 80s. Fox grew up with one of the canvas-walled types, as his family had one they used for several years. The insulation also helps cut down on noise a bit. We've camped a few times at Disney World and it can muffle some of the sound if you're trying to nap during the day.
